Wormistoune House & Gardens sits on the edge of the East Neuk, close to the royal burgh of Crail in the Kingdom of Fife. This is a place of legends, of stories, of poetry. Spending time at Wormistoune is a rare opportunity to be transported back to 17th century Scotland - a time when a laird’s home was surrounded by a heady mix of wilderness and sophistication. In days gone by, Wormistoune has played host to barons and lairds, to scoundrels and artists. Welcome to our little slice of living history.

Living history

The story of Wormistoune is intertwined with Scotland’s own rich tapestry. A new King often meant a new laird and a new laird always meant a new chapter; But at the heart of the story of Wormistoune must be the mythical Wyrm itself, an ancient Scottish serpent that lived on the mound. Although allegedly slain in the 15th century by the then knight of Wormistoune, it’s memory lives on.

Today Wormistoune is the home of the Mccallum’s of Wormistoune who have meticulously restored the property to its glory years. Where the Laird & Lady would entertain their guests discussing philosophy, economics, history and the incredibly exciting development of a modern enlightened Scotland.

You are invited to be a part of today’s conversation and help shape the modern history of Wormistoune.

Wormistoune House

To wander through Wormistoune’s halls is to encounter a story at every turn. Push open the thick oak door with all your might and the great hall lies ahead. Above you, a hand painted wooden ceiling adorned with vignette’s of Wormistoune’s past and present, from the poetry of Robert Burns to the adventures of Sir Patrick Spens. To one side is a roaring stone fireplace, with an old priest’s chair. To the other, an imposing oak table - a place for the Laird to hold court and share his bounty. Up the spiral staircase, the house reveals its Georgian side. The elegant, lovingly restored drawing room overlooks the garden’s Celtic love knot and over to the 15th century doocut. This is a room with one or two hidden secrets, waiting to be discovered.

Throughout the house, homage is paid to Wormistoune’s founding legend. The Wyrm of Wormistoune hides in plain sight, like its ancestors of old it lies in wait, patiently watching the world around it; protecting the Liard, the Lady, and their guests.

Continuing that tradition, Wormistoune serves as a private family home, but is also an event location open strictly by application.
